Abstract
Mathematics can play an important, even (one of several) key role in many real-world applications. I'll present a (personally biased) overview over several application problems from medicine and engineering, where mathematics can make a difference: cancer treatment, implant wear, flight trajectory planning, active thermography, time of death estimation, and optical metrology. I'll describe their application background, present numerical results, and highlight the arising mathematical and numerical structures: mostly mathematical modeling, partial differential equations, inverse problems, and optimization.
